CREATIVE NON-FICTION

Plot

A plot is an arrangement of series of events.

According to Aristotle it is exactly like a tragedy, a parody of reality, with a beginning, middle and end. According to Gustav Freytag it has 5 parts, mainly the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement; this is called "Freytag's Pyramid".

As seen above the introduction to setting and characters is known as the exposition, the problem or complication is the first conflict encountered by the characters. Rising action or the crisis triggers the climax which is the highest point or the peak in the story. After the climax we reach the falling action or the denouement, some see that the falling action and the denouement are different, just like the plot above, this is because most see the denouement as the ending when in fact the end is the conclusion or last event.

There are two kinds of plot, organic and episodic. Organic plots follow a chronological or normal flow with one setting, climax, resolution and theme for the entire story, while and episodic plot is composed of a series of episodes, each with its own setting, climax and resolution. There are also five types of plot arrangements: linear, circular, en medias res, and en extremas res. A linear plot follows a chronological arrangement of events. Circular plots include flashbacks. En
Medias Res start in the middle of the story while En Extremas Res start at the end of the story.
